Diary of a Breeder...

Tiny puppies...

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 7:45 AM

Everyone wants a "tiny" or a "teacup" when they email or call...I guess I understand the confusion with all of the false advertising out there about them but I really wish more people understood how frail a "tiny" dog is and how extremely difficult it is to keep them alive when they are born...I dont breed for super little dogs, never have and never will...  It would just be too heartbreaking wondering every day if they are going to suffer from hydrocephalus or have seizures and die from their sugar crashing.  Although I have had puppies that were born a normal weight and ended up being in the 3.5 pound range as adults, the average dog here is 4.5 - 5 pounds and to me that is small enough.   Small enough to carry around anywhere but big enough that you dont have to worry about it hurting itself or someone else hurting it because it is so small...

Sooooo if you are emailing me about a puppy, just tell me what size you are looking for in pounds:)

Nice thoughts this morning! We met a "tea cup" Chihuahua in the park a while ago and the owner told me that she had to carry her everywhere because the dog had suffered from three separate leg breaks... just from walking (I would assume due to compounded stress fractures). She also was feeding her every hour or so. Seriously, why do people want such a small dog?
